How your C.V. is put together says a lot about you to a prospective employer. At we encounter numerous C.V.’s every day. Some are well put together; some require work and some are plain awful!

No matter how good you are in person it is important that you also impress on paper. A shoddy C.V. may well be the reason you don’t get called to an interview.

Taking the time to give your C.V. a makeover is a very worthwhile exercise.

Here are some simple, easy to follow tips:

  • When submitting your C.V. for a particular role, you need to tailor it to that role. Relevance is Key. People simply do not have time to sift through unnecessary bumph that has no bearing on the job to be done.
  • Uniformity of Font type and size is essential. Nothing looks worse than several font types in different sizes throughout a C.V. It conveys that the candidate is disorganised and unfocused. The font theme Calibri, size 11 is widely regarded as an acceptable & professional font.
  • When you are using headings, embolden and increase font by several sizes for emphasis.
  • Keep spacing between points and paragraphs the same.
  • Align paragraphs at the same level of indentation.
  • Details of Education and Qualification should go to back of your C.V. Your prospective employer is more interested in your actual work experience and achievements in previous roles.
  • Include a candidate profile at the top of your C.V. to highlight key attributes and skills you possess. This gives the reader a snapshot of you.
  • Don’t overly embellish your “hobbies and interests”. You can easily trip yourself up! If you don’t kite surf, then don’t say you do. Your interviewer could be a seasoned pro at kite surfing!
  • References should be “available on request”. Don’t supply your Referees contact details until you have progressed to the next stage. Your potential employer could call them prematurely which could work to your disadvantage.
  • Do NOT put your photo on your C.V. It’s an application for a job, not a dating site!
