Rigney Dolphin to create 30 IT jobs…

Feb 17th, 2012No Comments

Thirty jobs are to be created at an IT company in Waterford.

Rigney Dolphin has begun recruiting for the new positions after sealing a deal to provide support services to the Cleveland Clinic in the US.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the expansion highlighted the importance of the Ireland-US relationship and the business opportunities it offers Irish companies.

“As an open economy I welcome the fact that Irish businesses are successful in the global market and from building on today’s successful collaboration I hope that Rigney Dolphin will further embrace new opportunities abroad,” he said.

Rigney Dolphin already employs more than 1,100 people at offices in Waterford, Dublin and Dundalk.

The agreement to provide patient management, patient outreach and telephone services to Cleveland Clinic was announced during Mr Kenny’s visit to Boston today.

The 30 new roles will be in clinical and support services, and the company expects to create more jobs in the future.

Dr Frank Dolphin, executive chairman of Rigney Dolphin, said working with Cleveland Clinic helped the company tap into the global healthcare market.

“It has enabled Rigney Dolphin to launch its services into an international market and has proven Irish firms can attain global standards in quality, delivery and growth,” he added.

Newpaper Readership in Ireland has declined by 2.4% year-on-year…

Feb 16th, 2012No Comments

NEWSPAPER READERSHIP in Ireland has declined by 2.4 per cent year-on-year, according to the Joint National Readership Survey published yesterday.

The JNRS report for 2011 shows that 2.89 million adults, or 81 per cent of the adult population, read the print editions of newspapers in the period. This compared with readership of 2.96 million a year earlier, representing 84 per cent of the adult population.

The Irish Times had an average daily readership of 310,000 people in the period, down from 339,000 in 2010.

The Irish Independent had an average daily readership of 477,000, down from 539,000 a year earlier, while the Examiner’s readership grew by 6,000 to 181,000. The Irish Daily Mail’s readership was 145,000, down 3,000.

The Daily Mirror fared best among the daily titles, growing its readership from 192,000 in 2010 to 214,000 in 2011. The Irish Daily Star had readership of 373,000, down 12,000, while the Irish Sun’s readership fell 2,000 to 275,000.

Among Sunday titles, the average readership per issue of the Sunday Independent was 939,000 in 2011, down from one million a year earlier. The Sunday World had 819,000 readers, down 2,000. The Sunday Times had an average readership of 386,000, down from 418,000 in 2010, although it recorded increases in the readership of its Magazine, Culture and Style supplements.

The Sunday Business Post’s readership was 154,000, down from 187,000.

The Irish Sunday Mirror grew its readership from 141,00 in 2010 to 183,000 in 2011. The Irish Mail on Sunday also saw its readership increase, recording an average of 338,000 readers per issue, up 9,000. It is likely that both titles picked up readers in the wake of the closure of the Irish News of the World last July.

The Irish Times had 163,000 Dublin readers, the highest number of any Irish morning title. Some 82 per cent of Irish Times readers are classed in the ABC1 social group, the largest percentage of any national title.

Among The Irish Times supplements, the Saturday Magazine attracts 365,000 readers on average per issue, while the Ticket has an average readership of 214,000. Readership of Health Plus stands at 299,000 readers per issue, up from 285,000.

Millward Brown Lansdowne, which compiled the report, suggested there was some evidence of a tendency among readers of daily titles to shift from regular to occasional readership.

Frank Cullen, co-ordinating director of the National Newspapers of Ireland, said readers had remained “remarkably loyal” to newspapers despite Ireland’s economic difficulties, with high readership rates even among the younger “digital” generation.

“Newspaper publishing is all about original content; we place a very high value on quality, original journalism, and I think the latest JNRS shows that most people in Ireland do as well,” he said.

The popularity of newspaper magazines suggested they were seen increasingly as representing good value for money, he added. “They have become a central part of the newspaper offering.”

Mastercard to create 130 jobs…..

Feb 15th, 2012No Comments

Credit card company MasterCard is to create 130 jobs in Dublin, with the opening of a new global technology headquarters.

The jobs will be created over the next four years, and will bring to 200 the number of people employed by MasterCard in the State.

Recruitment has already begun for the technology focused roles, and the expansion is being supported by IDA Ireland.

President of Mastercard Technologies Rob Reeg said the expansion and the new team would help further the company’s technology agenda.

“At our core, MasterCard is a technology company that happens to be in the payments space,” he said.

“MasterCard chose Ireland as a place to expand our presence because, from our vantage point, we see consumers moving toward a world beyond cash, shopping and paying for the things that matter to them in ways that best fit their needs and lifestyles with a simple tap, click or touch in-store, online or on a mobile device.”

MasterCard opened its Dublin office in 2008, when it acquired technology company Orbiscom.

Technology Predictions for 2012

Feb 14th, 2012No Comments

The birth of Apple TV and
failure of Google+ are
among the technology team’s predictions for 2012
1. Apple TV
Rumour has it Apple will
launch a television set in 2012. Making predictions about what Apple is planning
is a risky business but here goes: I think we’ll see an Apple TV set with
content delivered as iOS-style
apps.
Catch-up TV services, streaming films from
Lovefilm and Netflix and live
sport from Sky could be brought together to create an a la carte television
offering. Certainly, it’s unlikely to deliver everything and that will put off
lots of viewers. The current offering of films and TV shows for British Apple TV
users, for example, is far less comprehensive than it could be.
However, releasing a TV would encourage more providers to make their content
available. I feel quite sure that this is what’s coming. The only thing I’m not
sure about is that it’s coming in 2012. Even late 2012 might be too early for
such a bold product. We’ll see.
2. Kindle
Fire
lands
Amazon launched the Kindle Fire in
the US at the end of 2011. Despite some mixed reviews, the budget tablet has
been selling well – at least, according to the limited information that the
online bookseller has made available. We had to wait a long time before the
Kindle ereader was released in the UK and Ireland but it’s a
fairly safe bet that we will see the Kindle Fire here before the end of 2012.
As production ramps up, it’s possible that Amazon could be ready to expand
outside the US in the spring but it’s more likely that the Kindle Fire will
launch internationally in the autumn, ready for the Christmas boom.
There’s also a good chance that there will be a new version of the Kindle
Fire by then – either a second, larger tablet or an improved version of the
original. Amazon has a good record of improving the Kindle with each generation,
so there’s a good chance that British buyers will be getting a better product
than the one which has launched this year in America.
Shane Richmond
3. YouView finally launches
Next year YouView, the long-awaited internet connected TV set top box from
the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, BT, Arqiva, and TalkTalk, is finally expected to
make its much overdue debut.
It had been billed to launch in 2010, but has been best with delays due to
technical glitches.
This year Lord Alan Sugar was
brought on board to ferry the process along and get the boxes onto shop shelves.
The proposition, self-styled as the next generation of Freeview, is meant to be
a well executed product – but it remains to be seen what consumer appetite there
is for YouView.
4. Google+ fails as
a social network
Google+ is
unlikely to beat Facebook as the
world’s leading social network anytime during 2012. Plus after Facebook’s highly
anticipated $100bn float, it will have a major war chest to invest in the site
and spend on improving its reach.
In 2012 Google+ is more likely to become
another feature of the Google suite of web
products, rather than a killer social network which can rival Facebook’s
dominance.
Certain Google+ features, such as ‘Circles’, are
likely to be fun additions to the way people communicate and share certain bits
of information on Google-owned sites, such as YouTube. However, it
is highly unlikely that Facebook will have to worry about a major rival in the
form of Google+ next year.
Emma Barnett
5. Grim for RIM
The BlackBerry maker
looked increasingly out of its depth through 2011 as the mobile computing
revolution was advanced by Apple, Google and Microsoft.
RIM lacks the enormous cash reserves of those rivals, its smartphones are
dated (with updates disastrously delayed), its tablet is a debacle and its
market share is plummeting. The spike in RIM’s low share price when it was
revealed that Amazon had toyed with an acquisition shows that in 2012 the firm
will be a major target.
The outlook if RIM tries to turn things around on its own, as its executives
say it will, is grim.
6. Google antitrust woes
In 2012 we’ll discover if Google is a dangerous
monopoly. Its dominance of web search is almost complete, but the question under
consideration by the European
Commission
is whether Google abuses that dominance to promote its sideline
businesses at the expense of rivals.
The evidence that has emerged so far doesn’t look great for Google. Eric
Schmidt is already making conciliatory noises in the hope of reaching a
settlement and avoiding the enormously costly and distracting legal quagmire
that so damaged Microsoft in the late 1990s.

Harmony at Harmonia

Feb 13th, 2012No Comments

RTÉ Dragon and publisher Norah Casey said yesterday it was “a Herculean effort” for her publishing group to return to profit last year, writes GORDON DEEGAN .

Harmonia, the company that publishes Irish Tatler and U , recorded profits before tax of €331,571 in 2010, according to results just filed at Companies Office.

That compares with a loss of €193,140 in 2009.

Ms Casey, who is chief executive of the group, said profits last year “will be pretty similar” to 2010.

“We have worked very, very hard,” said Ms Casey of the figures which show a 12 per cent rise in sales to €6.5 million.

But she added that “in order to continue to grow, we need to make bigger profits. They are not good enough.”

She said Harmonia’s annus horribilis in 2009 required a major turnaround in performance, which had been done by “sweating the asset”.
